How to Apply Mascara: unlock your best lashes

Ditch the clumps! Learn to apply mascara like a makeup artist.

Apply Mascara

Perfect Apply Mascara involves more than a steady hand. I chose appropriate mascara product and brush design for lengthening, volumizing, and curling. Clean and dry my lashes before applying mascara to avoid clumping. I curl my lashes before mascara for optimum results. Start at the base of my lashes and twirl the wand upwards to coat each lash equally with mascara.

I apply numerous layers of mascara for volume, combing my lashes between coats to avoid clumping. I apply mascara to the top of my lashes and remove extra with a clean spoolie brush to avoid smudges. Finally, I precisely apply mascara to my lower lashes with a little angled brush for a professional finish. I get red carpet-worthy lashes with these secret techniques.

Choosing the Right Mascara: Finding Your Perfect Match

My own cosmetics selection experience has taught me a few things. There are so many options that I need to select one that suits my eyelashes and style. What I think:

  • Formula for Mascara: I’m always looking for a formula that works for me. There’s a mascara for every need. I can get length, thickness, or curls with this one. Like, I use a curly mascara on my straight eyelashes when they need a boost. And a volumizing product gives me that extra boost when I need it.
  • Type of Brush: The brush is more important than I thought. It changes how the mascara coats and divides my eyelashes. It makes a big difference for me to choose the right brush shape for my eye shape and the effect I want. Those thick, bushy brushes are great for giving me full volume, and curved brushes are great for adding curl.
  • Waterproof vs. General: What I choose between waterproof and regular mascara varies on what I have planned for the day. Waterproof mascara helps me on long days or when I shed tears. Makeup can be difficult to remove without a decent remover, so keep one on hand.

Prep Your Lashes: Setting the Stage for Mascara Magic

The best effects always come from prepping my eyelashes before I put on mascara. Before makeup magic, I do these things:

  • Curl Your Lashes: If I want to curl my eyelashes, I tap them gently at the base and hold for a few seconds. This makes the curl look natural. Then I move the roller to the very ends of my eyelashes. This step makes my eyes look amazing and makes a great base for the mascara.
  • Prime Your Lashes: Applying lash primer before makeup helps give my eyelashes more length and volume. The prep covers each eyelash, making them smooth and making it easier for the mascara to stick. Furthermore, it feeds and conditions my eyelashes, which is good for their general health.

How to Apply Mascara like a Pro: Step-by-Step Guide

Let’s go over how to put on mascara like a pro, step by step, now that your eyelashes are ready:

Apply Mascara

Step1: Start at the Base

  • Lay the mascara stick flat on the counter.
  • Use the stick to move the lashes around.
  • From the base to the end of the stick, move it.

Expert Tips: We apply a second mascara coat to accentuate our lashes. We repeat the method, focusing on the lash tips. This gives our lashes more volume and definition, highlighting them.

Step2: Wiggle and Sweep

  • Start with the wand parallel to your eyelid at the lash base.
  • Start zigzagging the wand as you sweep higher.
  • Move the wand to your lash tips keeping this motion.
  • Cover each lash gently and evenly.
  • Repeat to get volume and definition.

Expert Tips: We’ve learned that the best way to keep makeup from clumping is to be patient and in control. Using a good mascara from the start is also very important for getting the best results.

Step3: Focus on the Outer Corners

  • Spread out the makeup on your eyelashes.
  • Put extra coats of makeup on the corners of your eyes.
  • Gradually add more mascara until you get the look you want.
  • Focus on making the upper eyelashes longer.
  • Make sure that the eyelashes spread out towards the ends.

Expert Tips: When it comes to exact application, we’ve found that mascara with a tapered wand works best. When we put it on, we like to move the wand around at the base of our eyelashes to give them more volume and then move it outward to make them look like wings.

Step4: Build Thickness and Length

  • Use a thin mascara coat.
  • Dry it for a moment.
  • Another tiny mascara coat.
  • Continue until desired thickness and length are reached.

Expert Tips: By adding layers of makeup, we can make our eyelashes look as thick or thin as we like without getting clumpy.

Apply Mascara

Step5: Use the Tip of the Wand

  • Horizontally hold mascara wand.
  • Coat individual lashes with the wand tip.
  • Wiggle the wand up from the roots.
  • Lightly touch to avoid clumping.
  • Repeat for desired thickness/length.

Expert Tips: We pay close attention to each lash and take our time to get them really outlined. We’ve found that carefully using the wand’s tip makes sure that no lash is missed, giving you a beautiful, even coat.
